I suffered a broken heart when I read the news that my
favorite actor of all time passed away in the USA. James Garner died
Monday and all I can say is, they don't make actors like him anymore!
The oatmeal cookies were a hit at the office! President was in to discuss annual budget with Elder Goodrich, flats with Elder White, and 'other' with the assistants. He and Sister Baker met also.
I received an email from Sister Salazar saying that her mother passed away Friday, 18 July.
Hugs to you Judy! We miss you like crazy but are thankful you were able to be with your mom these past 4 months.
Still no heater repair but the landlord finally booked an appointment for Tuesday morning at 8:00 am to come over.
Lee sent the 'gong show suitcase' Monday and replaced the vault keys that were lost in last weeks craziness. He also had duplicates for the Carter's new garage man-door made, as well as replaced shed and storage closet keys.
Tuesday, we served subway sandwiches, chips, fruit, and ice cream bars for lunch for 27 at the Firle zone conference. I finished the "project" and sent it to President. I finally got arrival picture letters sent to the families. It was sunny and blue sky but cool although it probably got to 60 F.
Lee had his crown re cemented for $186.00, yep, you read that right! They discounted it to135.00 but it's still very 'dear' meaning EXPENSIVE!
Wednesday, the 3 new missionaries arrived from the USA! Lee took the van and trailer for luggage and the Carter's went to the airport also. Pictures, interviews, and orientation were held before we finally had the arrivers dinner we planned last week. The soups, salad, rolls and dessert were great, as were the testimonies of 5 of the 7 arrivers who attended. President also called on me to bear my testimony. Clean up was easy although we ended up spending time at the office waiting for logistical issues to be ironed out with luggage, bikes, etc. we arrived home after 9pm.
Thursday we had zone conference lunch for the Marion zone. We took mail and leftover luggage from the night before. Elder and Sister Goodrich went to the temple with a member from Fulham
Gardens ward so they were unable to help with zone lunch. It was easy though with subway sandwiches, apples, oranges, and ice cream bars. Very little preparation or clean up required.
Friday I woke up at 1:00 am with a headache and made a slow start Friday morning. We stayed home after lunch, Lee to be here while the heater repairman was working, and me to prepare my talk for Danny's baptism. As you know he speaks very limited English so I had to be careful with the words I used. I walked back to the office and caught the tail end of the arrivers training crowd. The Goodrichs were already gone transporting Woodcroft area Elders home since they are on bikes but needed to attend the training from 2:30-4:30pm.
Lee shopped groceries for us during the afternoon after teaching Sammie, Max, and Taylor the law of Tithing with Elder Bingham and Elder Pulalasi (on trade offs) in the morning.
I printed my talk and it was closing time. We left Sister Baker using her laptop computer when we left the office.
That night we went to dinner with the Carter's, Elder White, and the Scott's, organized by Lou and Petra to the Mexican place Carters took us to upon our arrival in Australia. It is tasty, but extremely small portions and spendy. Lou ended up ordering a wide variety of menu items brought out one at a time for all 9 of us and it was a lot of fun! Halfway through dinner, several people changed spots so we had new conversation partners. Lou and Petra surprised us all by picking up the tab. It was a lovely unexpected thing to do and appreciated! The food was just okay but the company was a blast!

Saturday
morning we talked to the girls and their kids (Logan is on his annual
hiking trip with 4 friends in N. California) before getting ready to be
at the church at 9:30 am for Danny's baptism. We took pictures once
Danny and a Lee were both dressed in their whites and then went in to be
seated for the meeting.
Christina, Danny's
wife gave the opening prayer, Brother Addis spoke on Faith (he baptized
Christina and Joy a couple of years ago) and then I spoke just before
the actual baptism ordinance. While Lee and Danny dressed afterward,
Elder Gamil and Elder Wairepo (new) taught us about the Restoration.
Elder Bingham and Elder Fepuliaii sang Consider the Lilies of the Field once
we were all reconvened, the Bishop spoke, and Danny bore a beautiful,
humble testimony in English. Sister Addis gave the closing prayer and
blessing on the food and then we had an enjoyable social time with fruit
and sweet breads.
Our friends Sammie, Max, and
Taylor attended the baptism too and the Elders gave them a tour of the
building and chapel after refreshments etc.

IT
WAS A GREAT DAY! Danny and Christina glowed and there was a lot of love
in the room! We are very grateful to be a part of the first day of the
rest of Danny's life! They are eager to learn, change, and live the
gospel. The ward is rallying around them and it really was a beautiful,
lovely, GREAT day!
Sunday President and Sister Fitton
from the Adelaide Temple Presidency were the speakers. She spoke of the
gift of the Holy Ghost in a thoughtful analogy, which struck me
profoundly, and went on to describe the temple within our stake boundary
as a most wonderful gift. Her husband spoke of the church today being
the same church of New Testament times when Jesus was on the earth.
And that we each can receive personal revelation as we thoughtfully, worthily, regularly attend the temple.
English class was on Looking for a Job after reviewing the Sacrament meeting talks. We had Sammie and Max and Danny and Christina in attendance.
We
came home and had a brief nap before we had to leave for the airport to
pick up the Elder and Sister Kallas. They have a couple of days in
Adelaide before going home to Washington state after 21 months of
service in Alice Springs. They are staying with the Whites and doing
some sightseeing etc.
Sunday night we were invited
with Elder Bingham and Fepulea'i to Christina and Danny's to learn how
to make Chinese dumplings. She had already made the two fillings: 1. Raw
mince (hamburger) shredded onion/shredded carrot and a 2.
chicken/prawns/shredded ginger and they had purchased "skins" which is
the dough you fill. After assembly, dumplings can be boiled, fried, or
steamed. The Elders learned how to make skins as well, and we all
agreed homemade dough was best. They boiled several batches of
dumplings in plain water, than tried frying a couple of batches. Lee
preferred the fried beef ones and I preferred the boiled beef ones, so
long as there was dipping sauce which Christina made from soy sauce
balsamic vinegar, fresh chopped coriander, and chopped spring onions.

and Max showed up when we were eating the first batch, along with
potluck soup. Christina also had some chili sauce that the brave hearts
tried. We had cold rock ice cream for dessert and a short lesson on
being member missionaries. It was a ton of fun to be together and
experience a food we would never ever try otherwise. We love our new
friends and love watching Christina and Danny befriend Sammie and Max.
Both couples need friends in the gospel so it's a win/win!
It's
been a FABULOUS week! There were a couple of gorgeous days weather wise
with sunshine and blue sky and this is still winter! Danny's baptism
was beautiful and again, we express our gratitude to the assistants for
involving us in the process.
