Goodbye, Green Chilis and Prayer (wk ending 30 Mar 2014).

Monday: we began to realize that this really IS Sister Salazar's last week. Lee left the flat at 3:55 am to transport a missionary going home for medical reasons to the airport. Lee was coming down with a cold and didn't go back to work after lunch. The Broughs came by the office and several zone leaders were there at the same time.

Also Monday, the Whites celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary with lunch out together at Primo Cafe just around the corner and tickets to the movies for Thursday afternoon.

Our granddaughter, Riley went into the hospital for tests this week in Utah.

The mission received a shipment of 7 large boxes containing 42 new men's coats from the previous mission president and his wife in the USA. We have a large percentage of islander missionaries who come without winter coats (who needs a coat in tropical paradise climate?) so the gift is greatly appreciated by many.

Tuesday: It rained! Arrivers training was from 2-4 so it was fun to see the new missionaries again and their trainers. Lee got soaked changing a flat tire in the parking lot for sisters who picked up a nail somewhere, then he took 2 different missionaries home to Valley View and made it back to the office in time to leave for Sister Salazar's going away dinner. She chose the Thai Orchid restaurant in Henley Beach with the seniors and President and Sister Carter. It was a great time although Lee wasn't feeling his best and Thai isn't his favorite. We got home around 8:45.

Sister Salazar sold her car! The buyer came to the office at 4:00 Tuesday to pay her cash! Cash is good!

Wednesday: Lee took the Carter's to the airport for an 8:40 am flight to Darwin and Alice Springs. Sister Salazar was in and out of the office doing last minute errands, closing her bank account, going to the DMV, etc. She brought in the remaining staple food left in her cupboards such as rice, oil, spices, and a few canned goods and let missionaries have it.

Wednesday night was English class. Lee wasn't feeling tip top so we made it short and sweet. I think our material may be too simplified for the Korean boys, but the Chinese couple are regular attenders.

While they are in Darwin/Alice Springs, Lee took the Carter's car in to have the GPS fixed and found out it's still under warranty for two more months! That was a tender mercy!

We had a nice surprise in the mail. I recently mentioned in a blog post that I missed canned diced green chilies and sliced pitted olives and we received a care package Wednesday from Lee's sister, Debbie, that contained diced green chilies and pitted sliced olives. What a treat!

Thursday: we left at 7 am to pick up Sister Salazar and load her luggage. It was a beautiful sunny morning and surprisingly, none of us even cried when we hugged goodbye at the airport. She flew to Sydney for an overnight stop in the big city. She arrived in Utah Friday afternoon.

Sister Salazar kindly gave Lee her TV and he is thrilled! She also left a plant and handwritten note for each of the office couples on our desks.

Sisters Hartley and Balenacagi (say Baa lynna thongy) brought chocolate treats to the office couples and the Carters with love notes attached. They explained that they knew I don't eat chocolate (say what???) so they brought us a beautiful fruit basket instead. Such thoughtful girls! I'm mad I didn't think to get their picture!

President called from Darwin Thursday to check on the office and I said things were pretty quiet. I said its not sad, but .........and he asked if we were 'mourning' which described it perfectly! Sister Salazar is a good friend and an inspiration and will be missed, and though we will eventually adjust, for now we are mourning her departure.

Friday: Elder Goodrich showed up at the office without Sister Goodrich. They were asked to speak in church Sunday, and we already reneged about going with them to Port Pirie and Port Augusta  because Lee is sick. So they are going to go without us Saturday, and she stayed home to prepare her talk and do laundry Friday since their p day will be spent on the road.

We had a FaceTime call during the day from Logan, with great grandpa Fred and Patty who are visiting from Oregon. They sent a group picture.

It was still really quiet around the office Friday. Whites were out doing flat inspections and repairs all day and we didn't have one missionary stop in. Carter's are gone still too. We received another care package with green chilis and sliced pitted olives, Olive Garden salad dressing, plus love notes from home.

Saturday: Lee was invited to teach with elders at 10 and didn't get home until 12:30. Then he went grocery shopping and we rested after. Dinner was left over taco casserole and we did a movie on the laptop with popcorn. As usual on pday, we did a lot of laundry, Lee washed the van in the late afternoon, and we rested.

Sunday: President and Sister Lee (Adelaide Temple President) were the speakers in Sacrament meeting. Her talk was focused on the question, " do you LOVE holy things?" and if you do....is it demonstrated by your actions? Do you go to the temple, read the scriptures, attend church, serve, etc.

President Lee spoke about the temple. Both talks were excellent and gave us cause for personal reflection.

We were down to one student in the English class Sunday, but it was still ok. Joony is taking missionary lessons and eager to learn both about Jesus and the church, and also the English language. We've noticed that recent immigrants to Australia will take an English name which is usually a simplified version of their given name.

Our lesson today was about saying a prayer in English. We discussed words like thee, thanks, blessings, Heavenly Father, and after the lesson I asked Joony if he had any questions. He asked how long we've been in the church? And asked if we have a Bible and I was able to explain that we use BOTH the Bible and the Book of Mormon to learn about Jesus Christ. Joony was willing to try and pray in English at the end of class after the spiritual thought and expressed thanks for his 3 good teachers, meaning Lee, Elder Bingham, and me. It was a good day and a good week!

Until next time......
