Lee spent time gathering information about other mission's bike
policies. He called the Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Australia missions
and we emailed friends serving in the Baltimore Maryland mission for
input and then everyone in the office brainstormed. Lee will present his
final recommendation to President Carter for consideration whenever we can
catch him still for 10 minutes.
The mission is excited for Elder Pearson's tour training. I spent Friday morning booking bus and ferry transportation for the outlying missionaries to be able to attend the meetings at our church building Thursday, January 16th. Mildura and Mount Gambier Senior couples and young missionaries are also traveling into Adelaide so we'll have the same crowd we had for Christmas which will be great!
January 1st, Lee and I turned over a new leaf! Although we don't have scales, we are both aware that our clothes are fitting a bit tighter than they were 6 months ago. Lindsey challenged us to walk 500 miles during the upcoming year (she'll be running) and recommended a free Nike app on the iPhone that measures, tracks, and records our daily mileage, pace, and accumulated total distance. Our current route measures door to door about 2.4 miles. Our pace has improved every day and we are down to 15.4 minutes per mile. We plan to change up the route and distance a couple of times this week for added fun.
We are up, dressed, and out the door by 630 am 5 days a week and we have enjoyed beautiful mornings recently. We much prefer the cooler am temperatures of approx 55-60 degrees, but I'm afraid we won't be so lucky this week as the highs are forecast at 104 everyday which means the mornings will be warmer too. Ugh!
We are trying to eat better and less. No sweets at all and I'm not eating bread, rice, or potatoes for the moment. It's harder to stay on track when we eat away from home, but we notice a HUGE difference in how we feel once we survived the chocolate withdrawal headaches of the first three days. Oh.my.goodness!
We attended the temple Friday night again and no, we didn't go to Barnacle Bills Seafood place afterward although the van wanted to turn in there as we went by.
Saturday morning we called kids and Freddie before Lee took me to the mall. It was my first trip since we arrived in Australia and though it looks like a mall in the USA, the only store names I recognized were Target and Crabtree and Evelyn. It was crowded! I was looking for shoes and was thrilled to find a soft comfortable pair. Hopefully they will feel just as nice after I wear them a time or two. They are a little casual looking but I'm all about comfort these days. Although I still refuse to wear shoes my grandma would wear.
Last Sunday we were invited to dinner Saturday night at Lew and Petra's. They have been attending church since we arrived in Adelaide and are scheduled to be baptized as soon as their mentors/friends return from the States. Although we met them in Gospel Essentials Sunday school class, we don't know them well. All that changed after last night's gourmet dinner, conversation, and garden tour. Seriously, their place is out of HOUSE BEAUTIFUL or something...Petra has a green thumb which totally shows in their yard and garden, and they both are extremely interesting and knowledgeable, yet down to earth. We enjoyed the evening so much and talked about everything from Australia's political system, pensions, to kids, health insurance, and their remodeling process. Dinner was fabulous, (ok, so we fell off the wagon, but what a way to go!) The meat was a barbecued chicken, wrapped in duck, wrapped in turkey roll and fabulous! She also served roasted potatoes and carrots, fresh homemade bread, and tomato slices with red onion and balsamic vinegar. The zucchini from her garden was thinly sliced lengthwise, marinated in olive oil, garlic, and thyme and barbecued also. Talk about a beautiful meal! Dessert was homemade pistachio ice cream in a French pastry with homemade chocolate syrup. Like I said, beautiful to look at and beautiful to eat! We are right back on the wagon today food wise though.
The rest of the week was spent running to the post office, bank, shed, dealing with lost bikes and their aftermath, missionary toothaches, calling about baptismal records, checking in and checking out the whipper snapper and lawn mower, cleaning windows and glass doors, inspections, plumbing issues, phone calls, deciding food supplies for this weeks lunch for 120, food assignments for the senior dinner Thursday night with Elder Pearson, checking on visas for upcoming transfer, gathering 2013 history, replacing Sister Salazar discussions, input w/flat concerns, non working gas cards, child protection forms, flats as in apartments, not flat tires, although I heard Lee talking about a flat tire on the phone during the week, stolen and broken bike lights, tracking down missing baptismal clothes and the list goes on. Thankfully, President Carter has all of us in the office to take care of these kinds of duties so he can concentrate on the HASTENING OF THE WORK! We are blessed to be part of it!
Elders Brough and Holmes invited us to go with them to a teaching appointment this afternoon.
(Sunday). We met Kirk and Jessica at church this morning and are looking forward to their progress as they learn about the GOOD NEWS!
We received Christmas cards this week from Cozzens, Ludwigs, and the Riverton Young Women and thank all for your kindness.
We sent our love and sympathy to our son in law Dave and his family at the loss of his Grandpa Garth. Also to our daughter in law Heather, and her extended family at the loss of her Grandma Delynn. Gratefully, knowledge of THE PLAN enables us to press forward after the passing of loved ones. They will be remembered and missed.
More news next week!
