It's winter and although not as cold as we are accustomed to in Utah
temperature wise, it feels cold because homes don't have centralized
heat. We cannot stay warm!
Monday was showery although we walked between storms and and stayed dry as we went the full 2.4 mile route for the first time since we turned over our new leaf. Elder Goodrich began the finance training with Sister Baker and the assistants were in as usual on Monday morning, so the office was hectic.
Three Elders called for haircuts and made arrangements for after lunch and Lee also needed one when we got home that night, which matches my previous record of four haircuts in the same day! I am happy to use this skill to help missionaries!
Tuesday I was on the phone again with SLC tech support after realizing all four office computers must be upgraded to work in harmony. It took some time but turned out great in the end. We are all happy now!
I worked on a million things during the day......letters, phone messages, missing key indicators, reports for President Carter meetings that night, computer issues mentioned above, emails, and on and on. I do enjoy being busy!
The Carter's returned from the North and I had a pot of homemade chicken noodle soup ready on the stove top and a loaf of crusty bread when Lee dropped them at their front door. I had turned it off and walked home and Sister Carter called when they got in to thank me. I made the same thing at home for dinner and it really hit the spot on a cold, dark evening.
Wednesday we had Sammie, Christina and Danny, Leo, and Ali at English class. I took chocolate chip cookies as a treat and everyone loved them. We stayed after for a missionary lesson on the Word of Wisdom and Danny committed to live the law without batting an eyelash. (I worried that tea would be difficult to give up but he said not.)
Thursday I woke up at 3:40 am and never did get back to sleep. At 6am I put chicken in the crockpot for bbq chicken sandwiches we served at Marion Specialized training at noon. We had just the right amount of everything this time and the missionaries are always very appreciative. We were back to the office just after 1pm.
President had interviews late that afternoon with a set of sisters and we had to stay until 6 at the office with the companion. Lee went teaching to Sammie's again with the assistants during the day. He chased at 9:30am to Marion after getting the frustrated phone call from Sister Carter saying she left her bag of scriptures and notes for the training sitting somewhere in her house! Help?!
Petra did a relief society cooking class Thursday night at her home beginning at 7:30 pm. Sister White and I attended (Lee dropped us off and Ron picked us up afterward) along with 6 ward sisters and we got home at 9:30. By that time my huge head ache was raging!
Petra demonstrated a yummy dense cake recipe and also a unique duck and pineapple salad. It had bean sprouts, fresh mint, fresh coriander, shallots, pineapple, springy onion, quartered cherry tomatoes, Lebanese cucumbers, and a lovely chili/garlic/lime/pepper dressing that was a bit too hot for some. Oh yeah, and chopped duck! She purchased it in an Asian shop at central market and it's cooked complete with skin and head still attached, ready to serve. (like we would use a cooked chicken... Sans the head :-) The duck was cut up into small pieces and I decided chicken breast or rotisserie chicken would work as well for my taste buds. It was beautiful to look at and with a tiny adjustment of milder peppers would be a 10 in my book!
Friday President met w Sister Baker at 9:15 am. We loaded the van with last minute items for the Carters to take to Mildura with them, teaching supplies for missionaries, Lee made a snack box and cooler for the trip, and a box of bike tubes. They left by noon and it was terribly quiet in the office all day after that.
We had a previous Adelaide missionary show up in the office just before Carter's departed. Garrett Johnson served here in 93-95 under President Westin, and was glad to chat for quite sometime with Sister Goodrich, Lee and I. Before he left, I took a picture of him in front of the Adelaide Mission sign for a '20 years later' memory.
Lee dropped Sister Baker at the grocery store at 2:50 and she was to call when ready to be picked up. Of course, it began to pour just before she called, and by the time Lee got her loaded from her cart to the van and then from the van to her flat, his suit shoulders and head were soaked! All of this transpired while feeling rotten with the FIRST sinus infection he's had in the past year. He brought medication from Utah though and finally started taking it Friday at lunch.
The Goodrichs and Sister Baker left for the temple at 4:45 Fri and we kept the office open until the stroke of 5. Unbelievable Portrush Rd traffic breaks and green traffic lights allowed us to make the 5:15 session at the temple. By the time we got home around 7:30 and I made dinner and we cleaned up, Lee was more than ready to call it a day! Me too!
We talked to the kids Saturday...I still marvel at FACE-TIME and feel very thankful to have access anytime we please. It is a huge blessing! Talked to Freddie and Patty also, did regular housekeeping and laundry, and tried to take a nap but the phone kept ringing. The assistants showed up to bring more mending and hemming which I worked on Saturday afternoon. I finished after 5 and texted to let them know the pants were ready and they retrieved them 2 minutes later since they were just leaving the chapel across the street.
We gave Sister Baker the TV that Sister Salazar gave us as Sister Baker doesn't have internet, TV, and doesn't read much. We took her home from Whites after the Elders left our house and set it up for her before coming back home for dinner.
President Carter called from Mildura later in the evening to discuss missionary car kilometer allocations with Lee and to thank us for the goodie box in the van. Sister Carter cried!
Please share this with the grandkids: Last Saturday we purchased several items and didn't notice until Monday or Tuesday that the clerk had charged us for only 1 instead of 10 of one item. Lee took the receipt back the next day and paid for the other 9 with a happy heart.
They kept saying "Thank you for being honest."
Sunday's sacrament meeting was on the topic of obedience and the three talks were excellent.
Ali, Christina, and Danny attended English class on Shopping at the Auto Parts store and we reviewed Going to the Hair Salon.
Sunday afternoon was spent at home relaxing, napping, and catching up on our scripture reading. Sister Baker dropped her phone in the van Saturday so Lee walked it over late afternoon just before Sister Carter called from Mildura saying we had a lost missionary in Adelaide. Somehow the two bike riding Elders got separated, and the one felt lost so he went to a members home but didn't have the phone or know his number (who calls their own phone?) to call the companion. The Carter's were notified and if a missionary is missing more than an hour, the Area Presidency is notified. We were asked to run to the office to check the voice mail and when we called back to report no messages, Sister Carter said the Elder had been found! We were so thankful! The assistants said he didn't really worry that he was lost and even gave a lesson at the members house! Now that's a dedicated missionary!
We love serving in the mission office, which is the hub of the mission, just as President promised in the phone call asking us to change our assignment from MLS to office. It allows us to interact with, help, tease, and grow to love these young adults serving as missionaries. Where else in the world could you find young people in this age group so disciplined, focused, humble, selfless, and obedient? NOWHERE! We are blessed by their dedicated commitment and example! Until next time......
